Reflective Narrative:
One of the most rewarding experiences I had was at service learning. On top of being able to get experience teaching in a school setting, we also had our in-class sessions that taught us what "service" is among other useful things for teaching foreign languages, and it's importance. In the on campus part we were able to read several articles on what the difference between service, volunteering and helping. The course made us more skilled in group work and critical thinking. We also learned the importance of foreign language in education, and one of the articles I found to be most interesting was talking about how learning a foreign language also aids in areas that are not even related to foreign language like mathematics and science,
Then there was the teaching at an Elementary school. I taught at Crumpton Elementary School in Marina, CA. There we taught three classes of about twenty children each. We taught kids from first to fifth grade. It was interesting to see what the children had initially viewed as being Japanese. The children got stuff like sushi and Pokemon, but thought that several things were Japanese that were actually from China, like pandas and stuff. We had a lot of different lessons on Japanese language and culture. We did lessons on things like origami, greetings, and other things of that nature. This class helped me with my career plans since I want to actually become an English teacher in Japan, so this class helped give me some experience actually teaching in a school environment, since I didn't previously have any.
