JAPN 300: Introduction to Advanced Communication
Course Description:
This course is a bridge course from intermediate to advanced Japanese language. It continues development of proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students develop communication strategies and cultural knowledge to prepare for advanced courses. Taught in Japanese.
Reflective Narrative:
We have become able to make daily conversation with native Japanese speakers, talk and write about my own travel experiences and Japanese/American traditions in Japanese, how to talk with people of a higher status using honorific forms, and how to give formal and professional speeches at a conference.
We practiced daily conversation, and different formality levels by doing practice conversation and skits.
We practiced and improved our writing and reading skills by learning kanji, and taking quizzes/tests to assess our progress.
We also practiced speaking in front of others by doing presentations on a variety of subjects:
- I spoke about an experience I had at a firework show while I was living in Japan.
- I gave a presentation about how my family celebrates Christmas.
- Then for the last presentation I, using honorific form, introduced a future parallel world version of myself at a professional conference.
One part that I found to be a good contribution for the major is learning how to speak in honorific forms in various situations
-business setting
-speak professionally
-daily conversations with older/higher status people, or people who you do not know very well.
I want to greatly increase my ability to read and write kanji. I also want to improve in public speaking so I can become a better teacher.
I want to improve kanji by practicing more frequently, using it daily, and to try to do more handwriting instead of typing. I guess I could improve my speaking by just speaking more in public, and going out of my comfort zone to converse with others.
