1.2. Students gain competency in the Japanese language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse and compare and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English.
Courses Taken:
JAPN 300
JAPN 301
JAPN 401
JAPN 402
1.1. Really my beginnings of intermediate level Japanese was highly influenced by my living in Japan serving as a missionary. This experience was my later substitution for the cultural immersion part of the major. So really for me the biggest influence on my ability to communicate in the different modes that the Japanese department here at CSUMB had was within the courses listed above. Each course required that I could converse in the target language while also being able to further my reading and presentational skills. My favorite aspects of these courses by far is learning kanji. It helps me with my reading ability which in turn increases my writing skills. I think that those are definitely important modes of the language, and each one of these classes aided in that. If we are talking purely about communication the biggest impact here that a single course had would probably be Japanese 301. A better understanding of what we did there can be found on the the JAPN 301 page, but basically the class allowed us to increase our knowledge of the language through learning about the culture and then coming up to do frequent presentations on what we had either read or been talking about in class. Throughout my time here at CSUMB I have most definitely been able to see an improvement in my ability to speak the Japanese language. It has also helped provide me with a way to continue furthering my knowledge of the language.
2.2. For getting the actual linguistics part of this learning outcome, or of the Japanese language rather, no class has helped more than JAPN 401 or the structure of Japanese. This course, as talked about in the actual course page, went over really every aspect of this part of the MLO. We first went over the different grammar structures, most of which had already been studied previously, and went over them in a way to describe, in Japanese, why they were used and in what different situations to use them in. It kind of gave me a better idea of how I would teach the language if I were to do that. Then we went into phonology and the international pronunciation alphabet. This is where we were able to learn about the sounds that exist in Japanese that don't exist in English and vice-versa. We also learned how to better our pronunciation through shadowing and studying where pitch accents fall on words. We then showed what we had learned by doing a self-introduction shadowing recording (see sample). This course helped greatly with gaining a knowledge of Japanese on a linguistic level.
